Swing That Mountain (GJB 8/16/08) released on January 18, 2009, this is a live recording of our 2008 concert at Music Mountain in Falls Village, Connecticut. Our featured guests were trombonist Art Baron and Bob Price on banjo. Although all of our guest trombonists have impressive backgrounds, Art is the only one who can truthfully say that he has worked with everyone from Duke Ellington to Bruce Springsteen. As a young man he spent time on the road with Buddy Rich, Stevie Wonder, and James Taylor. In 1973, at the tender age of 23, he joined the Duke Ellington band as the last trombonist Ellington ever hired. Since then Baron has built a career as one of New York's most distinguished jazz, studio, and pit trombonists, and as a favorite guest of the GJB. More recently Art has toured with Bruce Springsteen, playing sousaphone, mandolin, and penny whistle as well as trombone. In the world of brass players Art is a popular and respected clinician, highly respected as an authority on the plunger styles of Tricky Sam Nanton and other Ellington trombonists; we can hear examples of that work in his renditions of "The Mooche" and "Mood Indigo on this CD. He also leads "The Duke's Men," a band made up of Ellington alumni. Art has no stylistic limitations; no matter who he works with, from the most primitive to the most avant-garde, you can always be sure that he's having a ball.
