Gin House Stomp
is a live recording from concerts by Roy Rubinstein's Chicago Hot Six on the band's 2009 East Coast tour, which included concerts on three consecutive days in May for the Potomac River Jazz Club, the Pennsylvania Jazz Society, and Rochester’s Flower City Jazz Society. Roy began playing in England more than 50 years ago. His day job as a physicist brought him to New York in the 1960s and to Chicago in 1973, but he continued performing with excellent bands; for the past 30 years he has lead the Chicago Hot Six . John Skillman took up clarinet when he was in third grade and organized his first Dixieland band only three years later. He worked for 30 years with Virginia’s Buck Creek Jazz Band; in his spare time he is an electronics engineer.
Sarah Spencer presently works and teaches in Connecticut as a licensed massage therapist.
Before Sarah was born the late Norrie Cox played clarinet at jam sessions in her father’s basement in England; he later performed for many years with Roy in the Chicago area. After moving to the USA Sarah went to hear Norrie with the Chicago Hot Six in PA and was asked to sit in; she writes that “there was a huge feeling of a circle having been completed.” Jack Kuncl has played banjo with almost everyone who is anyone in Chicago’s traditional jazz scene; he is probably best known for his work since 1969 with the Original Salty Dogs. Art Hovey has played tuba and bass with Connecticut’s Galvanized Jazz Band for more than 40 years; when Roy was in NY he often worked with Art and the GJB. Art is a retired high school physics teacher, now teaching tuba and traditional jazz. Mike Albiniak has been drumming for more than 40 years in a wide variety of styles, from traditional jazz to symphony orchestras. Mike is also the Illinois area Labor Relations Manager for a major trucking company.
