Founder and leader of Uncle Yoke's Black Dog Jazz Band, Steve Yocum began his professional career in 1968 with Your Father's Mustache at Lake Compounce, Connecticut. GJB 6/27/99 is a compilation of performances by Steve with the GJB at the ChowderPot Restaurant in Branford, CT just after the closing sets at Hot Steamed Jazz Festivals in 1999 and 2002. The 1999 session included Fred Vigorito, Noel Kaletsky, Art Hovey and Joel Schiavone along with Sal Raniello on drums. That evening turned into quite a romp when Charlie Weyant and Sarah Spencer joined Noel on saxophones for two numbers. Brian Holland also sat in on piano for "The Sheik of Araby". (Although he sounded great, that tune never made it onto the first print of the CD. It has come to light that the real pianist for most of that night in 1999 was Jeff Barnhart! If you order now and request it you may still be able to get the rare first edition with Brian's name mistakenly listed by our producer, who is just a dumb tuba player. If not, you will receive the same CD with corrected text and Brian's "Shiek" restored.) In the 2002 session Russ Whitman was with us on clarinet and saxophones, Bob Bequillard was back on drums, and Bill Sinclair back on piano. What a thrill it is to hear Steve's trombone and vocals again after all these years! Steve was only 69 when he passed away on September 4th, 2020.
