Although the Neighborhood Music School was closed during the pandemic years, Art Hovey's adult student jazz ensemble went rogue and continued to rehearse weekly while observing all safety precautions. Now calling itself the "Central City Stompers", the band performs occasionally at various venues and now has its own Facebook page, Central City Stompers, where you can find links to recordings, videos, and info about upcoming events. On Friday, December 21 the Stompers will return to the Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts Center for another 7 to 9 pm performance. The Buttonwood is located at 605 Main Street in Middletown, CT. On Friday, September 27 (2024) the Central City Stompers performed on the center stage at the Durham Fair, Connecticut's largest agricultural fair.
On Tuesday, September 3 (2024) the Central City Stompers performed from 10 AM until 11:30 at the Guilford Community Center located at 32 Church Street in Guilford, CT. This free concert was open to the public, sponsored by the Schiller Shoreline Institute for Lifelong Learning.
On Sunday, June 2 (2024) the Connecticut Symphonic Winds performed in a combined concert with the Blasorchester Stadtmusik from Luzern, Switzerland! The concert was in the Montclair State University Memorial Auditorium.

On February 28 (2020) there was a free 7 PM concert by the NMS Faculty Ragtime Ensemble at the Neighborhood Music School, located at 100 Audubon Street in New Haven. Our part of the program featured works composed between 1900 and 1984 by Scott Joplin, Arthur Marshall, Joseph Lamb, Adeline Shepherd, George Gershwin, J. Russel Robinson, "Jelly Roll" Morton, and Galen Wilkes, all arranged by Art Hovey for clarinet, violin, cello, tuba and piano. The NMS Faculty Ragtime Ensemble members were Julie Levine, clarinet; Gretchen Frazier, violin; Jeff Chen, cello; Rachael Jungkeit, piano; and Art Hovey, tuba. On Thursday, Dec. 12 (2019) the Tom Brown 6 performed at The Social in New London, with Dr. John Clark on reeds, Doug Maher on guitar, Art Hovey on bass, Greg Wirt on trombone, and Tom Brown on trumpet. The Social is located at 208 Bank Street. Incredible food and an insane drink list, Lots of room for dancing, and lots of tables if you prefer to dance on tables. We hope to be back soon.

On Friday, November 1 (2019) the 39th annual Day of Tuba and Euphonium was at Central Islip High School. The concert began at 6:45 pm with selections by the Sunnyland Quartet with Bob Hovey on trombone, John Klumpp on trumpet, Art Hovey on tuba, and Don Keiling on banjo. (Don was filling in for Bob Barta, who was in Arizona with the Wolverine Jazz Band filling in for Jimmy Mazzy.) The evening's special guest was Lauren Veronie Curran, euphonium virtuoso from the U.S. Army Field band.
On Saturday, October 26 (2019) there was a concert by the American Chamber Orchestra, directed by Christopher James Hisey. The program included Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with soloist Will Duchon, and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5, Op. 107 �Reformation�. The concert was in the Norwalk Concert Hall at Norwalk City Hall, 125 East Avenue Norwalk, CT 06851. Information and tickets for future concerts are available at the orchestra's Website.
The 10th annual Jeff & Joel's House Party scheduled for this November in Branford was regretfully canceled due to logistical challenges. Ticket sales have been refunded. Performers previously booked but now at liberty for those dates include Jeff Barnhart, Dalton Ridenhour and Ian Frenkel on piano, Noel Kaletsky and Dennis Lichtman on clarinet & sax, Craig Grant and Jim Fryer on trombone, Dave Kosymna and Clint Baker on trumpet, Cynthia Sayer and Joel Schiavone on banjo, Mike Wetherly on bass, Art Hovey on tuba, with Tom Palinko and Riley Baker on drums. On August 15 (2019) there was a short concert starting at 6 PM at DeNicola Park in Hamden featuring Norman and the Rockwellians, a quartet consisting of Norman Plankey on guitar, Dan Elias on clarinet, Brian Slattery on trombone and fiddle, and Art Hovey on tuba. This event was free and open to the public, and this group was worth hearing.
On Thursday, July 11 (2019) the Heartbeat Dixieland Jazz Band returned to Smarty's Restaurant from 6 to 8 PM with Bill Logozzo, Fred Vigorito, Noel Kaletsky, Tom Boates, Gim Burton, and Art Hovey for a special celebration honoring and remembering the late Skip Hughes. There was standing room only! John Clark, Jeff Barnhart, Albie Bernard, and Diane Mower joined us on the bandstand for a truly memorable evening. On Saturday, December 15 (2018) the fourth annual TubaChristmas in New Britain was indoors at Trinity-On-Main, a beautifully restored old church located at 69 Main St, New Britain, 06051, conducted by Walter Gibson. There was free parking in the City Parking Garage on Chestnut St., across from Trinity- On-Main, beside the police station. Registration began at 10:45, rehearsal began at 11:15, and the performance was from 2 to 3 PM.

On Friday, April 13 (2018) there was a free 7 PM concert by the NMS Faculty Ragtime Ensemble at the Neighborhood Music School, located at 100 Audubon Street in New Haven. Our part of the program featured works by Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, Turk Murphy, and Jelly Roll Morton, all arranged by Art Hovey for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, tuba and piano. The concert theme was �It�s Your Lucky Day�. The NMS Faculty Ragtime Ensemble members were Chris Radawiec, flute; Reesa Gringorten, clarinet; Gretchen Frazier, violin; Ravenna Michaelson, cello; Joe McWilliams, piano; and Art Hovey, tuba. Also on the program was the 8-hand piano group sFOURzando, featuring Vicky Reeve, Margaret Ann Martin, Laura Richling, and guest George Melillo. Art Hovey (string-bass/tuba; active in traditional jazz for over 40 years, an original member of the Galvanized Jazz Band)
Tom Palinko (drummer, toured with Tommy Dorsey Band & with Rodney Dangerfield)
and Mike Owen (trombonist from England, aficionado of Kid Ory, Preservation Hall, and leader of The Bordello
Bedwarmers & the Woodland Jazz Band in Denmark).

Syracuse Jazz Appreciation Society at

7990 Oswego Road in Liverpool, NY.
Then on September 18 the same band performed from 6:30 to 9:30 PM for Rochester's

On Saturday, June 17 (2017) the NMS Ragtime Stompers performed at the Case Memorial Library, located at 176 Tyler City Rd, Orange, CT 06477 . Featuring some remarkable adult musicians who have been practicing traditional jazz, blues, and ragtime for several years at New Haven's Neighborhood Music School under the direction of Art Hovey, this performance was free and open to the public.
On Sunday, June 11 (2017) the Saxophone Rhythm Kings (Art Hovey's newest youth band) performed in the barn at Butch Butterworth's Giant Valley Farm after the polo match. The farm is located at 640 Tuttle Avenue in Hamden. Featuring some remarkable young musicians, this performance was free and open to the public.

The program opened with Tchaikovsky's monumental Symphony No. 4, followed by John Rutter's Requiem with the orchestra accompanying the Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut and soprano soloist Allison Fay. The second part of the program featured Ian Frenkel on Hammond B3 organ, with Rich Goldstein on guitar, Kris Jenson on saxophone, and Jesse Hameen II on drums. Then the final segment featured original compositions by Jeff Fuller and Darren Litzie with the two composers on bass and piano respectively, and Ben Bilello on drums. On Saturday, December 17 (2016) the second annual TubaChristmas in New Britain was indoors at Trinity-On-Main, a beautifully restored old church located at 69 Main St, New Britain, 06051, conducted by Walter Gibson. There is free parking in the City Parking Garage on Chestnut St., across from Trinity-On-Main, beside the police station.
