Jazz Lunch at the Yankee Clipper: Bill Logozzo's Heartbeat Dixieland Jazz Band performs every Wednesday from noon until 1:30 at the Yankee Clipper, located at 157 West Main Street in Niantic. (860-739-9634) It's just a short distance from I-95 Exit 72, the Rocky Neck Connector. No reservations are required except for large groups. But it's best to arrive early because seating is first-come-first-served. On February 8 the band will include Fred Vigorito, Noel Kaletsky, Skip Hughes, Ben Griffin, Shari Lucas, Art Hovey, and Bill Logozzo. Thursday nights at Oliver's: Bill Logozzo's Heartbeat Dixieland Jazz Band performs on the first and third Thursdays of every month from 7 to 9:30 PM at Oliver's Taverne, located at 112 Westbrook Road in Essex. Dinners and drinks are available, and there is a nice dance floor. On February 16 the band will include Fred Vigorito, Bill Logozzo, Sherman Kahn, Bill Sinclair, Art Hovey, and Skip Hughes. On Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 pm the Connecticut Symphonic Winds will present a concert of band music in the Roger Ludlowe Middle School Theatre in Fairfield, CT. The program will include Creston's Celebration Overture, Chichy's Colours, Herbert L. Clarke's From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific (with Art Hovey, tuba soloist), and the Barnes Symphony No. 3, the "Tragic", along with some lively traditional marches. On Friday, April 13 (2012), there will be a 7:30 pm concert by the NMS Faculty Ragtime Ensemble at the Neighborhood Music School, located at 100 Audubon Street in New Haven, featuring many new ragtime arrangements for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, tuba and piano by Art Hovey. This annual event is free and open to the public.
On Saturday, December 10 (2011) the Civic Orchestra of New Haven presented its annual holiday concert in the historic Battell Chapel, located at the corner of College and Elm Streets in New Haven. The orchestra is directed by Christopher James Hisey. Featured soloist Stephanie Gregory performed Gesu Bambino, Oh Holy Night, and selections from Handel's Messiah. The program also included Sibelius' Symphony #2, Beethoven's Overture to Fidelio, followed by Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride and Christmas Festival. Suggested contribution: $15 General Admission, $10 for Students and Seniors. . . . Directions On November 12, 2011 the Connecticut Symphonic Winds presented its fall concert in the Roger Ludlowe Middle School Theatre in Fairfield, CT. The pre-concert began at 7 pm with a brass ensemble, and the main program began at 7:30, with Philip Giampietro as featured euphonium soloist. These concerts are free and open to the public. The concert theme was The Scenic Wonder and Historic Majesty of America. We opened the second half of the program with the Sugarfoot arrangement of King Bolden On Parade. This concert was free and open to the public. Directions On October 17 (2010) Sarah Spencer's International Jazz Band performed from 4 to 7 PM at Macnamara's Pub, 5600 Newport Road in Camillus, near Syracuse, NY with Sarah on sax and vocals, Charlie Weyant on sax and clarinet, Charlie Bornemann on trombone, Bill Sinclair on piano, Art Hovey on bass, and Bob Lasprogado on drums. The same band performed on October 18 for the Flower City Jazz Society at the Green Lantern Inn, located at 1 East Church Street in Fairport, NY, near Rochester. On June 10 (2010) the Heartbeat Dixieland Jazz Band performed with Skip Hughes at the Tuskan Restaurant, located at 115 Main Street in Ivoryton, CT. All proceeds from this event go to Paul Newman's Hole In The Wall Gang Camp. On May 23 (2010) the Heartbeat Jazz Band with Dianne Mower performed in a 9:45am service at the First Baptist Church of West Hartford, located at 90 North Main Street in West Hartford. - On March 13 (2010) the Heartbeat Jazz Band performed in a fund-raising concert for Skip and Joyce Hughes at the First Church of Christ, 190 Court Street in Middletown, CT. The band for this occasion included Fred Vigorito, Noel Kaletsky, Dr. John Clark, Skip Hughes himself, Charlie Freeman, Gim Burton, Art Hovey, Bill Logozzo, and vocalist Diane Mower. The concert was recorded in both audio and video by 1080 Sounds, Connecticut's premiere outfit for on-site recording; CDs and DVDs are now available. Marce Enright wrote a nice review of the concert in her New England Trad Jazz Journal. On February 14, 2010, (Valentine's day!) Bill Logozzo's Heartbeat Dixieland Jazz Band performed for a 10:30 am service followed by a Mardi Gras Gumbo lunch at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, located at 59 Main Street in Cheshire, CT. The band included Fred Vigorito, Noel Kaletsky, Skip Hughes Art Hovey, vocalist Diane Mower, and Andy Barnett, a wonderful young pianist. Review of Diane's most recent appearance with the band: On February 7 (2010 the Heartbeat Band presented a Mardi Gras concert at the new Middletown High School, sponsored by the MHS Performing Arts Center. Review of the concert: On Saturday, June 13 the Heartbeat Jazz Band presented a 7 PM concert at the First Congregational Church, 190 Court Street in Middletown. It was a fundraiser for the Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival, with Sherman Kahn, Noel Kaletsky, Art Hovey, Bill Sinclair, Bill Logozzo, Fred Vigorito, Skip Hughes, and Cynthia Fabian. On June 7 (2009) there was a free outdoor concert from noon to 3 PM at the gazebo by the firehouse in Old Saybrook by the "Over-The-Hill Jazz Band", featuring Jon Seiger on trumpet and vocals, Russ Whitman, Carol Leigh, trombonist Jim Fryer, Mississippi pianist Sam Gore, Art Hovey on bass, and John Russell on drums. Molly and Emma Sayles from the Sugarfoot Jazz Band also joined us for a few numbers.
